The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, otherwise referred to as DARPA, is an agency operating inside the United States Department of Defense that is primarily in charge of the creation of new technology to be utilized by the military.

The ENGAGE program is initially planning to uncover proposals for innovative studies that would lead young students to be more “engaged” in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics(STEM).
Initially, this program is pushing to tackle an educational game-based approach that would hopefully help them develop methods to uncover the best strategies for teaching specific STEM topics, while at the same time taking into great consideration varying learning styles, demographics, and all the others factors that can affect the process of learning.
The program is also strategically hoping to determine whether the same problem-solving techniques can certainly be used to help children overcome and cope with stressful environments and social issues including bullying and other forms of emotional abuse.
For the fiscal years 2011 to 2012, the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency has allocated a projected budget in the amount of $25,000,000 to support the ENGAGE program.

The following organizations and institutions will be deemed eligible to participate in the ENGAGE program:
a) Historically Black Colleges and Universities, Small Businesses, Small Disadvantaged Businesses and Minority Institutions
b) Federally Funded Research and Development Centers and Government entities including but not restricted to military educational institutions.
Despite these guidelines, the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency will consider eligibility submissions on a case-by-case basis.
